A THANK YOU FROM JENSEN-SHEEHAN

WINTER DRIVING TIPS

  • Adjust your speed.  Cars require a 30% to 50% greater distance to stop in wintery conditions
  • Be careful when you brake at intersections where cars stop over the snow, melting it with the heat of the vehicle.  Ice and snow are most slippery when starting to melt.
  • Wear sensible gloves for gripping a steering wheel, not mittens

Here are some other winter tips to protect yourself and your home

  • Local public safety officials urge skaters, fishermen and snowmobilers to check ice conditions with them before venturing out on local rivers and ponds.  They remind us that a minimum of four inches of ice is needed for safe use by individuals, five inches for snowmobiles and 12 inches for pickups.
  • Clear snow off entire car.  Clearing snow from your car's windshield and windows is not enough for safe operation.  Flying chunks of snow and ice from roof, hoods or trunk can cause a collision for the driver behind you.
  • Consider these woodstove safety steps.  Frequent checks for creosote buildup in stovepipe and chimney.  Fire-retardant hearth rug.  Metal container with a tight-fitting lid for ash disposal(make sure ashes are cool when disposed).
